WONDER

WOMEN!

Wanda says:
"Here is an old photo I found, taken in 1996, with famed pianist             Dino Kartsonakis, who presented me with a Copper Kettle at the opening  of the Salvation Army Center of Hope in Springfield, Missouri.
I was also presented a certificate for contributing to their
Hometown Endowment Fund."
Column 95 - Part 1 - MOVE OVER, WONDER WOMAN! As Old Glory Comes Down, New Glory Is Flying High  (8/5/2016)
COMPETING as Wonder Woman was a miserable flop at the 1960 Artists & Models Ball in the Hollywood Palladium. If I’d known 56 years ago my patriotic creation wouldn’t merit a single point for best costume, I’d have saved my money, time, and energy. Instead, I stitched dozens of red, white, and blue satin hair ribbons onto an expensive strapless corset. Final touch to the patriotic costume was a flared net train sewn with double loops of boiled white cotton thread. The skirt’s front was open, revealing sexy fishnet stockings and black patent high heels. I paraded in the Grand March with Jim, my escort who stole our thunder as an unidentified Greek God.  (CLICK TO CONTINUE READING...)
Column 96 - Part 2 - CALLING ALL WONDER WORKERS Dare You Apply For The Commission On The Status Of Women?  (8/12/2016)
CITING Susan B. Anthony, a 19th -century role model for Wonder Woman, the Monterey County Commission on the Status of Women has announced August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. If you wonder what’s involved, contemplate this incident as if you were casting your own vote: In 1872, Susan B. Anthony went to the polls in Rochester, NY and cast a ballot in the presidential election. She cited her citizenship under the 14th Amendment as giving her the right to vote. She was arrested and fined $100, which she refused to pay.  (CLICK TO CONTINUE READING...)
Column 97 - Part 3 - HOMELESS WOMEN’S DOGS Wonder woofers and owners who won’t live without them  (8/19/2016)
“HOUSING FIRST!” If you were a homeless woman, or on the verge, housing would be your top priority. Alas, affordable housing is so lacking in Monterey County, that “housing first” is the slogan all agencies, both public and private, use in dealing with affordable housing across the board. A special category of need exists that involves homeless women with pets, a few being cats and the majority dogs.  (CLICK TO CONTINUE READING...)
Column 98 - Part 4 - AND THE WINNERS ARE? Wonder Women Who Vibrate In The Key of K  (8/26/2016)
WINNING races was Lois Marie “Shug” Cain’s low-hurdle passion before she quit running in Missouri track meets and ran off to marry my dad, William R. Childress, in 1932; two-and-a-half years later, I was born, and last week Mother woke me in a dream by k-k-k-k-ing like a wood-pecking jackhammer on a pine tree. If I didn’t remember Shug’s penchant for accurately predicting race winners, I’d have dismissed the early-morning wake-up vision, but the imagery wasn’t forgettable since my young red-haired, finger-waveing mother said, “Dreams, like poetic imagery, are mental metaphors you need to figure out. They’re more interesting than a game of solitaire and often more important.” “Is this one important?” “Do you have a column to write?”  (CLICK TO CONTINUE READING...)
